Troy University Admissions Requirements
FIRST TIME FRESHMEN
A. Unconditional Admission
High School graduates may be admitted as Freshmen to Troy University on the basis of acceptable high school records (minimum 2.0 GPA; "C" average) and scores achieved on the American College Testing Program (minimum composite of 19 on the ACT), or the Scholastic Aptitude Test (minimum composite of 910). Applicants who are 21 years of age or older are not required to submit ACT/SAT scores for admission to the university.
All applicants who are graduates of accredited high schools must submit an official transcript showing graduation and a minimum of fifteen Carnegie units, with three or more units in English. Of the units presented, eleven must be in academic courses.
Applicants who are graduates of non-accredited secondary schools may be admitted provided they meet the same requirements as students from accredited schools. Pending judgment of the Admissions Committee, these students are expected to complete satisfactory academic work.
B. Conditional Admission
An applicant who does not qualify for unconditional admission may enroll at Troy University as a conditionally admitted student if he/she meets the following criteria:
- If the high school grade point average is less than 2.0 (on a 4.0 scale), the applicant must have a minimum composite score of 19 on the ACT or 910 or the SAT.
- If the applicant's composite score on the ACT is less than 19 (but not less than 16) or 900 on the SAT (but not less than 780), he/she must have a cumulative high school grade point average of 2.5 or better (on a 4.0 scale).
The conditionally admitted student will be permitted to carry a maximum course load of 13 semester hours until he/she has attempted 24 semester hours of TROY work. The student will follow prescribed courses of study designed to strengthen his/her basic skills. Specific courses must be taken where weaknesses have been demonstrated. Conditionally admitted students who compile an overall C (2.0) average upon completion of 24 semester hours of TROY work will be granted unconditional admission status. Credits earned by a conditionally admitted student are recorded on the permanent record of the student and will apply, if applicable, toward a regular undergraduate degree program. If the student fails to earn an overall C average (2.0) in all work attempted during the conditional period, he/she will be dropped from the program and will be unable to return to TROY until his/her overall grade point average is 2.0 on all college work attempted.
GED FIRST TIME FRESHMEN
The university assumes that an applicant will have earned a high school diploma prior to enrolling. If the applicant is under 21 years of age, the ACT is required for admission. In the case of the mature student with an irregular educational background, however, educational proficiency equivalent to graduation may be validated by satisfactory performance on the high school level General Education Development (GED).
TRANSIENT ADMISSION
Records: Occasionally, students from another institution or another TROY campus may wish to study at Troy University and then return to their original institution. In such an instance, a Transient Student Form must be completed by the dean of the student's original college and forwarded to the Admissions Office, Troy University. The student must be in good academic standing.
TRANSFER ADMISSION
Records: Transfer students must have complete, official transcripts forwarded to the Admissions Office from each previously attended college or university.
General Students: All students who transfer shall have their credits evaluated for general studies equivalencies on an individual basis. It must be clearly understood that acceptance to the university and application of credits to degree programs are two separate and distinct processes.
Senior College Credit Required for Graduation at TROY: A junior college transfer student must earn a minimum of 50 percent of all degree program hours on a senior college level in order to graduate from Troy University with a bachelor's degree.
Transfers from Accredited Universities and Colleges: A student will be eligible for unconditional admission if he/she has a C average (2.0 on a 4.0 scale) on all college work previously attempted.
Conditional Admission: Transfer students with a grade point average of 1.70 to 1.99 may be admitted as conditional students. They must earn a 2.0 (on a 4.0 scale) grade point average on the first 24 semester hours attempted at Troy University. Students with a transfer grade point average less than 1.70 who have not attended any college in the past twelve months should contact the Dean of Enrollment Management for consideration for admission. Students in University College with less than a 1.70 transfer grade point average should contact the Troy University site/regional director for consideration for admission. Students failing to achieve this average will be dropped from the program and will be unable to re-enter Troy University until they have an overall 2.0 grade point average on all college work attempted. A conditionally admitted transfer student will be permitted to take a maximum of 13 semester hours until he/she has cleared the conditional status and will be required to take a special course during his/her first two terms.
