Michael D. Holmes teaches Design History and Art History in the Art Department at Troy University, as well as History classes at Troy University Dothan, where he often taught while completing a second Master's degree (in Community Planning), and then a Ph.D. (History) at Auburn University in 1997. Having also taught at the University of Georgia (History) in 1999-2000 and Tuskegee University (History of Architecture) from 1987-1988, Dr. Holmes brings a wealth of experience in classroom teaching. Son of an architect in Dothan, Alabama, Dr. Holmes grew up in design. Interest in History, however, led him to Liberal Arts and Birmingham Southern College, concentrating on Art History. When the school's Art Historian was hired away, he eventually transferred to the University of Alabama, completing a BA in History with a minor in Art History. He continued at Alabama, taking an MA in History, concentrating in Historic Preservation with outside field in Art History, in 1981. Dr. Holmes then went to work with the Southeast Alabama Regional Planning and Development Commission, based in Dothan but serving a seven county region. Primarily involved with preparation and administration of grant documents for city and county governments in the region, Dr. Holmes worked in all aspects of small town and county planning. In 1982, he also received a Rotary Foundation fellowship for group study in Pakistan, where his hosts kindly arranged visits to numerous important cultural sites, including one of the first cities in world history, at Mohenjo Daro, and to Taxila, where Indus Valley and Greek cultures met after the conquests of Alexander the Great. Deciding to investigate another degree, Dr. Holmes went first to the University of Virginia for a Summer Session in Architectural History in 1986. He then turned to Auburn University, and began work on a design degree in Community Planning while teaching at Tuskegee University and helping with various projects being constructed by his father's firm, Holmes and Green Architects, including the new Troy State University at Dothan campus. Fascinated by urban design history, he combined courses in Planning with coursework in History and Art History. Completing requirements for the Master of Community Planning in 1990, his final project, a paper on the planning and design of the Carolina colony, won the national student research paper prize awarded by The Society for American City and Regional Planning History the following year. While completing the Planning program, he had entered the Ph.D. program in History at Auburn in 1989, and again combining History and Art History coursework, Dr. Holmes developed this paper into a general study of method and design in English colonization for his doctoral dissertation, and received the Ph.D. degree in 1997. Recently,
in addition to teaching in Troy and Dothan, Dr. Holmes has served on the
City of Dothan Historic Preservation Board (2002-2003) while pursuing
ongoing research interests and a keen interest in twentieth century design,
especially glass, ceramics, and furniture. robertm@gracebal.net 334.670.3391 TROY|Department
