Duane Paxson was born in York, Pennsylvania. His parents, originally from Delaware and New York, moved to Alabama in the early 1960's. Duane, a former clarinetist, began his career as a Sculptor in the early 1980's and received his MFA from the University of Alabama with a minor in Ceramics. His studies included jewelry design in Florida State University. The musical influences in his work are seen through these seemingly organic musical instruments and notes that seem to have sprung to life gracefully and joined eternally as "nature's jewels."

Duane's work has received International and National attention, and has been reviewed in major Sculpture and Art publications. He has won numerous sculpture and drawing awards. Originally a painter, Paxson developed as a sculptor throughout his graduate studies at the University of Alabama.

Paxson centers his works on unusually shaped pieces of wood fused with textured resin while incorporating acrylic paint, as well as fragments of ceramic, steel and fiberglass. He seeks to strike a balance between mastering material and allowing it to retain its essential natural spirit.
