MISSION
The Medical Technology Concentration at TROY prepares students for careers in Medical Technology, also known as Clinical Laboratory Science. Medical Technology is a diverse, science-oriented profession aimed at the gathering and analysis of biologic samples from patients to assist physicians in the diagnosis and treatment of diseases.

OVERVIEW OF PROGRAM
All Medical Technology students are required to take the Biology program core courses and the following courses which are required for admission to the Clinical Internships: Anatomy and Physiology I and II, Hematology, Immunology and Parasitology. The inclusion of lab-based investigations in these courses serves to prepare students for their Clinical Internship courses and careers in Medical Technology. In the 3+1 Plan, students take an intensive three-year schedule of courses at TROY that includes one summer of classes. Then they complete their Clinical Internship in their fourth year at Baptist Health Center-South School of Medical Technology in Montgomery that TROY is affiliated with, after which they graduate both from the Medical Technology School and from TROY. In the 4+1 Plan, students complete their undergraduate degree in Biology at TROY and then they can apply to any Medical Technology School for their internship year. Students who successfully complete their internship are eligible to take national certification examinations.

CLINICAL INTERNSHIP
The Clinical Internship consists of one year of study at an accredited School of Medical Technology. Students on the 3+1 Plan will register at TROY during their Clinical Internship year, but will take their Clinical Internship courses at the School of Medical Technology in Montgomery that Troy University is affiliated with, Baptist Health Center South School of Medical Technology (www.baptistfirst.org/edu/medtech-school.htm). The Clinical Internship consists of 17 credit hours of courses and laboratories in Clinical Chemistry, Clinical Hematology, Immunohematology, Clinical Microbiology, Clinical Parasitology, Clinical Serology, and Clinical Urinalysis. The Clinical Internships are competitive and are awarded by the participating School of Medical Technology; TROY students are not guaranteed a place on an internship.
Students on the 4+1 Plan will have completed their Undergraduate Degree in Biology and are able to take their Clinical Internship at any School of Medical Technology in the country. Students apply to the schools of their choice, but should be aware that the internships are competitive. Students taking the 4+1 Program do not need to register for their Clinical Courses at TROY during their internship year.

NATIONAL CERTIFICATION
There are three basic steps to becoming a nationally certified Medical Technologist: (1) a baccalaureate degree from an accredited university, with specific courses taken; (2) graduation from an internship at a NAACLS-accredited Medical Technology program; and (3) successful completion of a national examination for Medical Technology such as the Board of Registry www.ascp.org/bor.

The Troy University 3+1 program allows students to accomplish steps 1 and 2 simultaneously, with the internship program at our affiliated Medical Technology school preparing them for the national exam. The affiliated Medical Technology school assists students in applying for the national examination and confirm that they are eligible to take it. Most students take the national examination within 2-3 weeks of graduation from the internship. Passing the national examination earns the successful candidate the designation of MT (ASCP). Students on the 4+1 plan earn their baccalaureate degree first, and then they are able to complete their internship at any NAACLS-accredited Medical Technology program in the country, after which they take their national examination. A search engine for these programs is available on the NAACLS website (http://www.naacls.org/).

CAREER OPPORTUNITIES
Students who complete the Medical Technology Concentration at Troy University and become nationally certified Medical Technologists can look forward to excellent career opportunities. There is currently a high demand for Certified Medical Technologists all across the country. Medical Technology graduates typically work in clinical hospital laboratories, privately owned laboratories such as those in physicians' offices and clinics, regional reference laboratories, public health laboratories, in research, and in industry. There are also opportunities for positions as sales or technical representatives with companies that manufacture and distribute laboratory equipment and supplies. Graduates who complete the program also have an excellent background for continuing their education in medical, dental or graduate school, or in other health professions.
