Food Safety Concentration Approved

The Alabama Commission of Higher Education recently approved a new Food Safety Concentration within the undergraduate Biology Program.  The new Food Safety Concentration will emphasize the importance of food safety at the local, state, national, and international levels of food handling and production.  The Department expects to  offer two new courses during the '08-'09 academic year:  Food Microbiology and Food Laws and Regulations.  Students will also take courses in the Sorrell College of Business (Restaurant Management) and the School of Nursing (Human Nutrition).  Graduates will master the many aspects of public health and will be able to find jobs within the government (local, state, and federal), hospitals, restaurant industry, restaurant supply industry, cruiselines, hotels, and other hospitality establishments.

We will begin establishing contacts with the hospitality industry for local internships.  We are also exploring Study Abroad options because of the global implications of food safety.  Please contact Professor Heath Lofton-Garcia (hlgarcia@troy.edu) for additional details.
