What is it? Established in 1892 as the International Kindergarten Union, the Association for Childhood Education International is the oldest professional association of its type in the United States. The Mission of the Association for Childhood Education International (ACEI) is to promote and support in the global community the optimal education and development of children, from birth through early adolescence, and to influence the professional growth of educators and the efforts of others who are committed to the needs of children in a changing society. As of 2003, ACEI has members in more than forty countries, each working toward the same goal: the education of our future. The organization publishes two journals: Childhood Education and Journal for Research in Childhood Education The local chapter of ACEI is named for the late Ms. Tex Whaley, an outstanding educator in Troy State’s Kilby Hall Lab School, Pike County Public Schools, and Troy State University. Membership is open to all interested students, regardless of academic major or grade point average. Faculty members are also invited to membership. Some ACEI activities include the following: meetings; fund-raising events for philanthropic projects; tutoring; working at the Homecoming tent; and collaborative projects with SCEC and KDP.
