What is it? A Big Brother or a Big Sister is a volunteer who is not a substitute parent, babysitter, or disciplinarian, but a friend who can help a child meet the many challenges of growing up. A Big/Little match is a special, professionally-supervised friendship, designed to give children attention and support, and enhanced opportunities to enjoy childhood. The focus is not spending money, but on spending quality time with a child. After filling out an application, volunteers complete a thorough application process. Professional staff carefully consider the interests and preferences expressed by volunteer mentors, children and parents in determining the best match for everyone. A mentoring specialist works with the volunteer mentor, child, and parent, providing on-going support to help the friendship grow. A volunteer must be 18 years old or older and a positive role model.
