The purpose of the Professional Studies Exit Exam is to ensure that all education students have a good understanding of classroom management, student assessment, instructional technology, developmental psychology, and social foundations of education before they begin their internships. This exam is designed to determine whether you have internalized the important topics from your professional studies classes. It is advisable for students to spend a significant amount of time (at least 30 hours) reviewing for this exam. Use your class notes and texts to aid your review. If you have any questions concerning material in an area, you should direct your questions to the appropriate instructor. Bring the following to the Exam: (1) sharpened number two pencils; (2) an ink pen, if you wish, for the essay section; and (3) your picture student ID.  If you have any questions about the administration of the exam, contact Dr. Minnick in the Office of Teacher Education at 670-3447. Although the exam is comprehensive in scope, you may find it helpful to pay particular attention to the following topics: You will receive 13-14 multiple choice and/or true/false questions from each of the following three areas. Each question will be worth 2 points.

Classroom Management The topics in this area are based on information that is covered in all of the classroom management courses.  These courses are EDU 4400, HPR 4465, and MUS 4403.

  • Establishing and enforcing rules
  • Behavior modification strategies
  • Rewards and punishments
Student Assessment The topics in this area are based on information that is covered in all of the assessment courses.  These courses are EDU 3346 and HPR 3391.
  • Percentile scores
  • Score interpretation
  • Standard deviations
  • Z scores
  • Correlation coefficients
  • Learning targets
  • Instructional objectives
  • Bloom’s Taxonomy of Educational Objectives
  • Selecting assessments
  • Test error and bias
Developmental Psychology The topics in this area are based on information that is covered in all of the growth and development courses.  These courses are NSG 2205, PSY 3320, and PSY 3325.
  • Maslow’s hierarchy
  • Piaget’s stages of development
  • Piaget’s theory of assimilation and accommodation
  • Vygotsky’s views on the importance of language
  • Information processing memory theory
  • Intrinsic motivation
  • Importance of developmental theories
  • Different research designs
  • Parenting styles
  • Howard Gardner’s theory of intelligence
  • Stability and meaning of IQ scores
You will receive two short-answer questions from the following area. Each question will be worth 10 points each.
