Welcome to American Legion Auxiliary Alabama Girls State, the greatest state of all! This week has been planned just for you and has been designed to give you the best training possible in practical citizenship. It will be a week of growth and challenge every single minute.
You can represent the finest young women in your high schools, your communities and your state. You are the best! You are here because you possess leadership ability and sensitivity to the importance of government participation by individuals. You are concerned about knowing more of good government through leadership. You are a leader.
The future is yours! You will have a definite responsibility in shaping America in the 21st Century with its problems to be solved and its progress to guarantee. We know you will ably meet all challenges. We believe in you. You are our future!
Across our nation more than 20,000 girls are attending such American Legion Auxiliary Alabama Girls State Sessions and thousands and thousands of young minds and hearts have been enriched by attending Girls State over the years. Since 1942, every high school in Alabama has been encouraged to send one outstanding girl from their Junior class, the one who is best qualified in leadership, citizenship, scholarship, and government, to participate in Girls State.
Be totally involved this week in American Legion Auxiliary Alabama Girls State! Win or lose, you will have the personal satisfaction of knowing you did your best. Then, go back to your schools and communities determined to tell about Girls State and to stay involved in politics in some manner. The future is yours to guarantee!

Dear American Legion Auxiliary Alabama Girls State Citizen,
Congratulations upon your decision to attend American Legion Auxiliary Alabama Girls State 2012, it will be one you always remember! As the largest women’s patriotic organization, the American Legion Auxiliary takes pride in this premiere youth program. You and your peers will embark on a week long journey, to be remembered forever. American Legion Auxiliary Alabama Girls State develops tomorrow’s leaders in a fast-paced environment where you will learn about city, county and state government.
All over the United States young women just like you will be representing their school, their community and a respective American Legion Auxiliary unit at Girls State. This is an opportunity to make your mark in American Legion Auxiliary Alabama Girls State history. I encourage you to participate, for you will be richer for the experience, and I encourage you to capture the moment; this is an opportunity that only comes to a few and it will not come your way again.
As National President of the American Legion Auxiliary I have chosen as my theme for the Power of One. I believe this one experience can change the course of your life. One decision, one connection, one memory or one experience can make a world a difference to you and those in your community, maybe even those across the country. What you choose to make of this week and the opportunities that our program provides is entirely up to you. I wish you success as you embrace this opportunity to learn and grow.
