The Department of Social Work evolved from the Department of Human Services, which emanated from the Psychology Program in the Department of Education and Psychology in the mid-1960’s. By the 1980’s the development of various programs in Social Work and Rehabilitation lead to the configuration of the Department of Human Services housed in the Department of Education.  In 1978, a formal academic program of Social Work was created.  The current Department of Social Work is housed with the Department of Human Services and Rehabilitation reflecting the scope of baccalaureate degrees offered, in addition to the collaborative spirit with which these professionals co-exist and depend on each other in rural and suburban settings. The mission of the Social Work Program draws upon the quintessential belief that the preservation of the quality of human life in an increasingly complex world is achieved through education, advocacy, and respect.
 Accreditation. Troy University’s Social Work Program is a fully accredited member of the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE).
UNDERGRADUATE Degree. The primary educational objective is the preparation of graduates for beginning generalist social work practice. Students must apply and be admitted to the professional social work program in order to enroll in advanced social work courses. This accredited social work program covers the following course-work areas:

1. Values and Ethics
2.  Diversity
3. Populations-at-risk and Social and Economic Justice
4. Human Behavior and the Social Environment
5. Social Welfare Policy and Services
6. Social Work Practice
7. Research
8. Field Education

Students must complete a minimum of 120 semester hours of study including the following:

1. Forty-eight (48) hours of general studies coursework
2. Eighteen (18) hours of pre-professional coursework
3. Twenty-nine (27) hours of departmental core coursework
4. Fifteen (15) hours of social work professional coursework
5. Twelve (12) hours of social work field practicum in a community social agency.
