Department of Kinesiology and Health Promotion
Mission Statement and Objectives

The Department of Kinesiology and Health Promotion strives to provide quality educational degree programs for students interested in teaching careers in Health and Physical Education or careers in the diverse field of Sport and Fitness Management. It is our mission to offer programs that enhance the lives of our students by making them marketable for meaningful employment by:

  • applying theoretical models by implementing practical experiences
  • involvement in interdisciplinary collaboration
  • preparation to participate in professional, social, and technological change
  • providing exemplary leadership through teaching in the classroom and in the field
  • demonstrating effectiveness in teaching and internship opportunities

As one of the oldest departments on campus, the Department of Kinesiology & Health Promotion (KHP) consists of four degree options: Health and Physical Education Comprehensive Program, Physical Education, Sport and Fitness Management (Bachelor of Science), and Sport and Fitness Management (Master of Science).

Objectives of the KHP department include providing students with knowledge and applications in their content area of choice while promoting life-long learning and exploration of knowledge.

The purpose of the undergraduate Health and Physical Education Comprehensive Program is to provide a comprehensive teacher education program in health and physical education. This comprehensive program allows you to become a candidate for teacher certification in Health (grades 6-12) and Physical Education (grades P-12) in the state of Alabama.

The purpose of the undergraduate Physical Education Major is to provide a teacher education program in physical education. The Physical Education program allows you to become a candidate for teacher certification in Physical Education (grades P-12) in the state of Alabama.

The purpose of the undergraduate Sport and Fitness Management Major (SFM) (non-teaching/non-certification degree) is to provide a course of study that focuses on “core requirements” that teach communication, sport administration, event and facility management, and issues relevant to sport finance and business. In addition to the “core requirements,” SFM majors are required to select one of the following 18 hour minors: recreation, health promotion, or exercise science.

The purpose of the Sport and Fitness Management (Master of Science) program is to provide the graduate with the knowledge, skills, and attitudes to engage in the practice of management in a variety of settings. You will be provided with classroom, laboratory, and clinical experiences to accomplish these objectives. The graduate degree culminates with a thesis or a non-thesis practicum or internship option.
