The Mary E. Rich Health Center (on-campus)
- The Health Center is located on campus in Hamil Hall.
- General care services are available to all Troy University students.
- A professional doctor, nurse practitioner, and trained nurses are prepared to take care of most of your general health needs.
- Consult with the health center first before going to an off-campus doctor or to the hospital.
- The Health center is open 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.
- The international health insurance policy may not cover all expenses.

Troy University Counseling Center
- Troy University also provides personal counseling for students that may be facing issues with adjustments to college or to a new environment.
- Counseling services provides free, confidential services to students, offering them a safe environment to express their concerns or discuss issues they feel are interfering with their adjustments to college or the environment around them.

Other Health Services in the City of Troy
- You should only use the Troy Hospital Emergency Room for real emergencies.
- Non-emergencies or ambulance service is very expensive.
- Although the city of Troy does not have a 24/7 medical clinic, SARHA Health Clinic provides extended evening hours.

International Student Health Insurance
- Troy University requires all enrolled International Students to carry medical insurance meeting the standards set forth in the insurance regulations for exchange visitors and their families mandated by the United States Government. Without health insurance, any hospitalization or health care is extremely expensive.
- The period of insurance is August 1 - July 31 of each academic year. The annual insurance premium is noted below and is subject to change. If you enter Troy University for summer or mid-term sessions, coverage would be prorated and is payable immediately.
Cost
- The International Student Insurance for 2010-2011 is provided by MultiNational Underwriters. The premium costs are: Student: $76.90 per month; fall semester = $384.50; spring semester = $538.30
- Insurance coverage for dependents is not required, but may be purchased with reduced benefits. The premium costs per month are: Student plus Spouse: $384.90/month; Student plus Child: $209.90/month; and Family: $521.90/mont

Alternate Health Insurance
If you have health insurance provided from your home country or purchased in the United States, you may opt out of the Troy University coverage. However the alternate coverage must meet specific criteria and an insurance waiver must be provided to the International Student Advisor within 30 days from the beginning of a semester. Students choosing to opt out of the university insurance policy may request a waiver form from Ms. Judy Nelson Strickland's Office via email: jstrickland10684@troy.edu. The form must be completed by an official of the student's insurance company and returned to Ms. Strickland's office by the deadline on the form.

Is health care available on campus?
- YES.The Health Center in Hamil Hall should be the first place you go to if you need advice about your health.
They will examine and treat you if you are sick,answer your questions if you want to know more about staying well, and will refer you to the best off-campus specialists or hospital if you need more care.
Most health care received at the student health center is covered by the student's international insurance plan.
In many ways our doctors and nurses serve as your "family" away from home. They care about what happens to our students and understand how frightening it can be to receive health care in a country where the language or customs are not your own.
In the event that you become ill while studying at Troy,we will "advocate" for you to be sure that you receive the best care possible.
Are emergency services available?
- YES. In the unlikely event that you become seriouslyill while at Troy,we might refer you to an off-campus specialist or to Troy Regional Medical Center which is a major medical center only 1.5 miles from campus.
If you have a medical emergency, or if you need immediate help when you are on campus, call 911 or Campus Security at 670-1999, they will respond to your call immediately (24 hours per day, 365 days per year) and arrange for you to be taken to the hospital for evaluation and treatment.
Is my health care confidential?
- YES.That means that we will not discuss or disclose your medical history or treatment to anyone without your written permission.
Not to teachers, not to family members, not to anyone. It is the law in the United States.
Is health care in the US expensive?
- YES. That is why it is important to have medical insurance while you are living in the US.
You should also know that off-campus specialist or hospital care will be partially covered by the student insurance plan.
Students should expect to pay any remaining costs related to off-campus specialists, emergency care, hospitalizations or other expensive tests or treatments. Please Note: While the Troy University International Student insurance pays up to 100% of covered expenses, no insurance plan covers 100% of all services.
Are international students required to purchase medical insurance?
- YES. All full-time students are required to carry medical insurance by Alabama law and students will be billed automatically.
The federal government requires students with J-1 visas to carry family insurance when they bring their spouse and children with them.
