Leadership Course Descriptions

LDR 1100:  Introduction to Leadership (3 hrs)

This course helps students apply leadership knowledge, skills and techniques to campus and community activities.  Practical exercises, role-playing, class interaction and lecture/discussion with established leaders reinforce learning and aid each student in developing a personal leadership plan.


LDR 2200: Tools of Leadership (3 hrs)

This course helps developing leaders use tools essential to effective leadership, including personal management and business etiquette skills, interpersonal and communication skills, motivation and persuasion skills, meeting management and group dynamic skills, time management and fundamental organizational and planning skills.


LDR 3300: Leadership Theory (3 hrs)

This course helps students understand and apply what writers, theorists and leaders tell us about how to lead effectively in a rapidly changing world and exposes students to what leaders are reading.  Experienced leaders will provide guest instruction.


LDR 4400:  Leadership Seminar (3 hrs)

A capstone course that includes principles, practices and presentations by experienced leaders from the public and private sectors.  This course helps developing leaders synthesize knowledge and prepare for future leadership challenges.  Must have a leadership minor, be in the University Honors Program or have permission of instructor to enroll. 


LDR 4402 Leadership Seminar Laboratory (2 hr) 

This laboratory includes field trips to visit CEO’s, senior state government officials and military leaders as well as business and dinner etiquette training and one-on-one mentoring by campus faulty and administrative leaders.  This lab is open to a limited number of developing leaders who have been active in campus and/or community activities and must be taken concurrently with LDR 4400.  Requires permission of the Director of the Institute for Leadership Development to enroll.


LDR 4493-4494: Guided Independent Study (1-3 hrs)

Supervised study through field or laboratory projects, guided readings, creative endeavors or achievement of specific skills.  Prerequisites:  Junior or senior status, permission of guiding professor and approval of the Director of the Institute for Leadership Development.  A written request must be submitted to the director at least two weeks prior to the term in which study is to be undertaken.  May not be used to repeat a course for which a grade of D or below has been earned.
