The program involves travel, interaction with the Chancellor and Senior Vice Chancellors, release time from normal duties, and completion of a group project of value to the university. Recent projects include:
- A proposal for a Troy University Teaching Academy.
- A project in support of combining all Troy units into "One Great University."
- A study and recommendations to improve enrollment management at Troy University.
- A study and proposal to improve study abroad opportunities at Troy University.
Candidates are typically nominated at the department level and forwarded through the appropriate dean to the Director of the Institute for Leadership Development who presents nomination packages to the Executive Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs. Each spring semester the Chancellor selects four or five highly qualified faculty or staff members who demonstrate potential for positions of increased responsibility. Fellows come from the various campuses of Troy University and are given the opportunity to:
- Increase their understanding of the range and scope of Troy University
- Enhance their understanding of higher education in Alabama
- Learn new administrative and leadership skills
