Interdisciplinary Studies for Leaders
Leaders need to think creatively and strategically. Interdisciplinary Studies (IDS) features courses for those who want to see the bigger picture and see the world differently.
In these courses, which can count toward the leadership minor, 15 students interact with each other and three of Troy university’s top faculty members from different disciplines as a “Community of Learners.” These courses help prepare students to succeed in a world that is increasingly specialized, complex and interdependent. The interdisciplinary approach helps leaders learn to think creatively and strategically.
Fall semester 2008 features two seminars, each listed as IDS 2200:
Tuesday 1 p.m. – 3:45 p.m. TGWA “Discovering Obsolescence“ Professors Gayle Bush, Peter Howard and John Jinright will challenge students to explore ideas about to use science, the visual and musical arts and storytelling as ways to understand the world around us. Students will learn some science, read some writing and watch some films in order attempt to order the chaos of the universe; their attempts may come up short, but it should be worth the effort—and fun.
Tuesday 4:00 – 7:00 p.m. TJWA “Science Fiction, the Universe and Everything: Understanding the Universe through Science, Music and Storytelling” Writer and Science Fiction Teacher, Jim Davis: Physicist, Govind Menon; and Composer, Carl Vollrath and the students in this course will explore how to use these subjects to establish order in the chaos of the universe. Students need not have a background in these subjects—only active imaginations and the desire to have a good time.
