The Leadership Conference Celebrating African-American History Month is held annually at Troy University. This conference provides valuable information to enhance the quality of leadership and civic participation of community leaders, area residents, and university students. This annual conference is coordinated and sponsored by the City of Troy and Troy University. Major Sponsors of the conference since its inception have been the ministry of Reverend S. D. James and Wal-Mart.
In addition to valuable break-out sessions for both university students and community participants, the keynote speakers for the most recent conference were Bishop Vashti M. McKenzie and Dr. Calvin Mackie. Past speakers have included Ms. Lyn Vaughn and Mr. Tim Reid, Judge Greg Mathis, Ambassador Andrew Young, Dr. Joseph Lowery, Dr. Belle Wheelan, Mr Thomas N. Todd, the Honorable Lois Deberry, Columnist Cynthia Tucker, former Birmingham Mayor Richard Arrington and Reverend Jamal-Harrison Bryant. Each year the committee selects a new chairman. Mr. Homer Wright, Pike County Commissioner, is serving as the 2012 conference chairman.
