The Mathematics Club at Troy University, named after former Department Chair Virgil Collins (who used the above symbols for his signature), serves to engage students and faculty in activities for the cultivation of their common mathematical interests.  These activities

bullet

engender keener interest and sound scholarship in mathematics;

bullet

promote appreciation and enjoyment of mathematics;

bullet

inform students about opportunities for careers and graduate study in mathematics;

bullet

promote the interaction between students and faculty;

bullet

encourage independent research in mathematics;

bullet

learn mathematics outside the current curriculum.

To this end, the Mathematics Club has invited speakers from graduate programs at the University of Georgia, Auburn University, University of Alabama, and Georgia Institute of Technology (Georgia Tech).   The club has also sponsored invited talks by the faculty in the Department of Mathematics and Physics and field trips to the Marshall Space Center in Huntsville and to the Farley Nuclear Plant in Dothan.   Over the years, members of the club have enjoyed many social gatherings including cookouts, ice cream suppers, tailgating, and homecoming parades and activities.
