Creating a Diverse Professional Nursing
Workforce through Learning and Practice Communities
Overview
As of July
2008, the BSN program was awarded a federally funded grant
with the purpose of increasing the professional nursing
workforce through learning and practice communities. The goal
of this project is to increase the academic success of
students in the attainment of a baccalaureate degree in
nursing through support of students in the pre-nursing
courses, retention activities in the nursing curriculum, and
provision of student scholarships and stipends.
Practice Partnerships
To
effectively address the needs of the nursing workforce, an
educational and practice consortium has been formed consisting
of
School of
Nursing
administration and faculty and nursing leaders from the health
care agencies in the area.
Pre-Nursing Students
Activities to
support pre-nursing students include:

participation in a peer mentoring program
-
scheduling of classes with other nursing
majors
-
placement in on-campus housing with other
nursing majors
-
faculty mentoring
-
involvement in the Student Nurse’s
Association
-
opportunities to attend enrichment workshops
-
job-shadowing opportunities
-
tutorial assistance in communication, math,
and science
-
availability of personal and professional
counseling
Pre-Nursing students are eligible
for monetary stipends.
Students in the Clinical Sequence
Activities to
promote retention include:

participation in a peer mentoring program
-
faculty mentoring
-
workshops on PDAs and informatics
-
NCLEX preparation
-
training for extern opportunities
-
tutorial assistance from a nurse tutor
Students in the clinical sequence are eligible for
monetary stipends and scholarships

Acceptance into the clinical nursing sequence

Resident of the target counties*

Agree to participate in project activities

Rating will be based on the need for
financial assistance and previous participation in the
project.
Scholarships
are in the amount of $1000 per year.
