Program Description

The Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) program is offered in Montgomery, Troy, and Phenix City. The MSN is designed to provide graduates of baccalaureate programs in nursing the opportunity to develop the advanced knowledge and clinical skills required for leadership positions in nursing.  The MSN program prepares clinical nurse specialists in Adult Health Nursing, Maternal-Infant Health Nursing, and Nursing Informatics, and nurse practitioners as Family Nurse Practitioners.

The MSN degree is awarded on completion of course work with a 3.0 or better grade point average (GPA), fulfillment of candidacy requirements and successful completion of the required comprehensive examination.

Students may enroll for full-time or part-time study.  Students are accepted for admission to the Clinical Specialist track for part-time study every semester or full-time study in the Fall semester. Students are accepted to the Nursing Informatics Specialist track for part-time study every semester or full-time study in the fall semester. Students are accepted for the Family Nurse Practitioner track in the Fall semester only.  The Family Nurse Practitioner Certificate option is available for MSN-prepared nurses.

   
Admission Process & Criteria

Persons seeking admission to the MSN program must meet the admission requirements of the Graduate School, Troy University and the School of Nursing.

Steps for Admission to Troy University and the School of Nursing:

  1. Submit Application for Admission with a $50.00 application fee.  (The application fee is not necessary if you have attended Troy University previously.)

  2. In addition, a $20.00 application fee to the School of Nursing is required prior to actual enrollment in any School of Nursing program.

  3. Submit a completed Student Medical History form.

  4. Submit a completed Supplemental Information Sheet.

  5. Have official transcripts submitted directly from all colleges attended.

  6. Have official MAT or GRE test scores submitted directly to Troy University.

  7. Submit proof of current Alabama RN license.

  8. Submit three letters of professional reference.

Admission Requirements for MSN Program:

  1. Graduate of a BSN program from a regionally accredited institution.

  2. Acceptable undergraduate grade-point average (see Troy University Graduate Bulletin).

  3. Acceptable scores on the MAT or GRE (see Troy University Graduate Bulletin).

  4. Undergraduate health assessment course or the equivalent.

  5. Current RN licensure.

  6. Three letters of professional reference.

  7. Ability to perform Core Performance Standards for Admission and Progression.

  8. Minimum of one year experience as a registered nurse is required for the Family Nurse Practitioner track.

The application and all supporting documents must be completed and on file in order to be reviewed by the MSN Admission Committee.  The application along with all supporting documentation should be mailed to:  Troy University, Office of Admissions, College of Health and Human Services, 340 Montgomery Street, Montgomery, AL  36104.

Clinical Requirements All students enrolling in a clinical nursing course must have current, written documentation of the following clinical requirements:
  1. Current licensure as an RN for the state of Alabama and the state in which you will be having clinical experiences, if other than Alabama.
  2. Professional liability insurance purchased through Troy University or a carrier designated by the MSN faculty.
  3. Annual physical exam with TB skin test indicating sound health.
  4. Results of serum titers for measles, mumps, rubella, and varicella, indicating immunity.
  5. Evidence of immunity to Hepatitis B or proof of beginning vaccination series.
  6. Proof of BCLS certification (ACLS certification is acceptable).
  7. Verification of current health insurance.
  8. Negative drug screen certified by Dynacare Laboratories and Troy University School of Nursing medical officer prior to first clinical course.

Evidence must be valid from the time of registration through the end of the term of enrollment.
