Program Description

The Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) track provides both the BSN and MSN nurse a program of studies which qualifies the graduate to sit for the national certification examination. The program for BSN graduates requires a minimum of 47 semester hours of both theory and practicum courses (see FNP Track Program of Studies for listing of required courses). Upon successful completion of the program the graduate is awarded the MSN degree with the clinical major FNP.

The post-Master's certificate option for nurses who hold the MSN degree requires 31 semester hours (see FNP Track Program of Studies for identification of required courses for post-Master's certificate option).  A minimum of one year experience as a registered nurse is required for admission to the Family Nurse Practitioner track. In addition to the admission requirements for the MSN program, students admitted to the post-Master's certificate option must have an MSN degree from an accredited institution and submit official transcripts reflecting the MSN degree.

Courses in the FNP track are offered in Montgomery, Troy, and Phenix City. A learning resource center and computer services are available at all sites. Various settings and facilities may be utilized for clinical experience.

Students are accepted for admission to the FNP track for part-time study every semester or or full-time study in the Fall semester. Nursing faculty consist of doctorally prepared nurse educators and nurse practitioners. Specialists in other fields serve as mentors, instructors, and preceptors.

Students may expect:

  • Development of competency in the family nurse practitioner role
  • Advancement of a broad knowledge base
  • Increased professional leadership skills
  • Completion of the course of study in 5 semesters of full-time or approximately 7 semesters of part-time study
  • Active collaboration with other professionals
