Domestic Violence Awareness Month

This is a month long campaign in October intended to raise student awareness about domestic violence, the need for prevention and the availability of services for victims of abuse. Activities typically include: distributing purple ribbons/bracelets, a poster campaign & presenting on the topic to various classes and organizations.

“Battle of the Blues”: Depression Screenings

This is an annual event held during Fall semester that stresses to students the importance of taking care of their mental health. During this week, we offer a 2-day, free & confidential screening to students to assess for symptoms of depression, mood disorder, generalized anxiety disorder and posttraumatic stress disorder. Literature and resources are also made available to those students in need.

“Be Comfortable in Your Genes”: Eating Disorder Awareness Week

This is a national observance designed to enhance efforts to prevent and help treat those struggling with an eating disorder. It’s usually held in February and includes a 1-day screeening that is both free & confidential for students. The events for this week direct the students’ attention to the serious damage eating disorders can have on their physical and emotional well being.

Sexual Assault Awareness Month

This is a month long campaign in April intended to raise awareness on campus about sexual assault, safe dating and services available to all victims of sexual assault and violence. The SAVE Project staff distributes teal bracelets, hosts a poster campaign and is available for presentations on topics related to sexual assault.

“These Hands Don’t Hurt” Campaign

This event is held every Spring semester and allows faculty, staff and students to commit to helping to decrease the incidents of violence against women. Participants are asked to place their handprints on a board and pledge to take a stand against violence, promoting a campus environment in which everyone can feel safe.

Rape Aggression Defense System

The Rape Aggression Defense System is a program of realistic self-defense tactics and techniques for women. The R.A.D. System is a comprehensive, women-only course that begins with awareness, prevention, risk reduction and risk avoidance, while progressing on to the basics of hands-on defense training. R.A.D. is not a Martial Arts program. Our courses are taught by nationally certified R.A.D. Instructors and provide each student with a workbook/reference manual. This manual outlines the entire Physical Defense Program for reference and continuous personal growth, and is the key to our free lifetime return and practice policy for R.A.D. graduates.

The Kinesiology and Health Promotion (KHP) Department offers R.A.D. self-defense classes for a 1 credit hour PE course during Spring and Summer semesters. Register early, the classes fill quickly!

Troy City Police Department also provides RAD basic self-defense and radKIDS programs in the community. Contact: Detective Michael O’Hara or Sergeant Tim Hunter at 566-0500 for more information.
