Writing Center
Frequently Asked Questions

Who can use the services of the Writing Center?

Any student enrolled at Troy University can make use of the resources at the Writing Center at no cost to the student. The University provides our services for your benefit.

Can I drop off my paper and let you correct it?

If you let us correct your paper, you won’t learn anything; therefore, we won’t do your work for you. We will, however, go over your paper with you and show you how to make corrections.

Do I have to make an appointment?

Sometimes you can walk in and find a tutor available, but you’ll be more certain of getting help if you schedule an appointment at least a day in advance.  Walk-in visits are limited to 15 minutes, while appointments are made for 30 minutes.

What should I bring when I come for an appointment?

Bring a copy of your assignment and a draft of your paper. If you’re still in the brainstorming stage, bring a copy of the assignment and notes of your ideas, and we’ll help you develop those ideas. A typed copy of your work is useful if you are in the editing stage of writing.

Will my instructor know that I came to the Writing Center?

That’s up to you.  We will send reports to the instructors to let them know what you worked on unless you request otherwise.

Can you guarantee that I will get a good grade on my assignment?

No.  We do not guarantee any grades.  In fact, our goal is to help you improve your writing, not just your writing assignments.  However, as your writing improves, so should your grades.

What if I can’t get to the Writing Center during its regular hours?

If you will make your appointment a day ahead, someone will meet you at a time convenient for you. You may also email any questions or comments you have to wcenter@troy.edu.

What if I’m a Troy University student, but I’m not taking classes at the Troy campus?

The services of the Troy University Writing Center (Troy campus) are provided for any student who is enrolled for at least one credit hour in residence at the Troy campus; however, other Troy University students will be assisted as time, personnel, and resources permit. Usually, you can email your paper and any questions you may have to wcenter@troy.edu, and someone will respond, often within 48 hours, or you can call and talk to a tutor or the Writing Center coordinator at 334.670.3305.  Tutoring sessions by email or phone cannot be as specific or detailed as a face-to-face visit, but we can help you address any major questions.

If I don’t have time to work with a tutor, where can I find information online about grammar or writing guidelines?

Go to troy.troy.edu/writingcenter/handouts.html and view some of the helpful documents on our web page. You may also visit troy.troy.edu/writingcenter/links.html and visit some of the other online resources listed there.

How do I contact the Writing Center?

You can visit us on the Troy Campus at 124 Eldridge Hall; call us at 334.670.3305; email us at wcenter@troy.edu; visit our website at troy.troy.edu/writingcenter.
